Rodent Lung Mycobiome

We found animal symbionts within the fungal order Onygenales in mammal lungs including Coccidioides, the pathogen causing Valley fever.

Species of Pneumocystis are obligate lung commensals that were both diverse and abundant in our mammmal lung samples. Host specificity was evident for multiple genera of Heteromyidae especially Dipodomys.
